Chief Bender I presume is native  American

His father was German and his mother was Ojibwe.  When he was taunted on the field (not uncommon in the early part of the last century), he would either smile, or yell back "Foreigners!"

He was very intelligent, according to Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie. Could steal signs at about any time. Also credited as one of the pitchers who invented the slider, called a "nickel curve" at the time.
