Ralston held a bunch of starters out of the '70 Purdue game. He had the big one against USC the following week and wanted to be sure his players were healthy. Smart move.
The Air Force game was played in the snow. Air Force was no slouch, either. They went to the Sugar Bowl.
Stanford had already clinched the Pac 8 Title before the '70 Big Game. They were flat, Cal wasn't.
A possible National Championship and a long winning streak eluded Ralston in '70 and '71. Stanford was favored, sometimes heavily, in all of their losses those two seasons. The knock on Stanford was that they, "Couldn't win the little one".
