If this were the case for Georgia, maybe UGA might have blitzed Bryce Young before the second half when down by 14+ points. I watched the Alabama-Auburn game and was simply astounded why Georgia didn't follow the same defensive game plan as Auburn, who held Alabama to 0 points through 3 quarters bringing 5 and 6 pass rushers to sack Bryce Young seven times.
Georgia played that SEC CG game like losing wasn't the end of the world for them, with zero urgency. They had the arrogance to think they could rush just 4 guys as they had all season, and it would work to stop Alabama as it did everyone else. Now, should they face Alabama again, they will do so knowing the original plan of rushing just 4 isn't going to work against Alabama. And now that key Alabama WR John Metchie out for season, they will have an even bigger advantage in a second matchup.
Why the hell should Georgia get a mulligan nobody else gets?
They don’t. They simply are the best one loss team left. Can’t see why you have such a hard time with that. ND played a patsy schedule. Got whipped by the one ranked team they played. OKSU would have had a great argument - had they won. They didn’t. Utah has 2 losses. And the PAC-12 (deservedly) gets no respect. So who is left?
Methinks this is one of those SEC is overrated rants. It is not. It is by far the best football week in week out in the country. And it has, by far, the most talent. As evidenced by the number of SEC players in the NFL.
As for your urgency comments, are you kidding? They had the chance not only to win the SEC, but also would be 1 seed, playing weakest team. And best of all, perhaps knock Bama out.
Big 10 is, IMO, the second best. Michigan has a great chance to make a statement.
You can say you think it's fine that a team can be in playoff even after losing its conference championship game. I'll disagree, but at least it's a legitimate position to take. You can't tell me something didn't happen that absolutely did and expect me to take that position seriously.
Facts:
- Auburn constantly sent 5 and 6 guys after Alabama's QB and stifled their offense as. result
- Georgia didn't employ this tactic until well behind in the game, thinking they could get pressure with just 4
- Georgia could "experiment" and not lose playoff opportunity with a flawed playoff system that allows teams to fail in a championship game
I have a hard time with a team losing a conference championship game and being in a 4-team playoff because that is suppose to be where the best a team can muster is produced. It's suppose to mean something and be critical. If the playoff field is expanded, then sure, allow Georgia in.
But it's not credible to place all this emphasis on a championship game, and then have it mean everything for one team to win, and not be catastrophic for the loser. Losing a seeding spot is not even close equivalence to missing the field entirely. And if you expand the playoff, conference championship games don't mean much other than bragging rights, and I fail to see the logic of even playing them. I mean I do, it's a money grab, but they are not very meaningful or as meaningful as they should be, IMO, after expanding playoff field.
I'm just glad we didn't see the current #1 team at #4 after losing to Georgia. That might have happened at the expense of Cincinnati, which would have been outrageous. I don't care who is favored by how much over who. You have your chances to perform when the money is on the line and if you don't you should be out. Period.
