I know that Posey retired and therefore forfeits the $22 million club option for 2022.  But do the Giants still have to pay the $3 million buyout if they bring back Posey in another role in the organization?  I would assume not...

As for the payroll status, as near as I can tell, here's the Giants 2022 luxury tax situation, assuming a $210 million/team tax threshold (yes, I know it's not set in stone).  Stats from Spotrac:

Active payroll, $83 mms. (assumes deferred payroll, $4 mms. which counts against 2022,j Posey at $0 and Belt at $18 mms.).  Total current tax allocations and obligations are $86,315,300 leaving approximate cap space of $123, 684,700.

Time for owners to open the vault.  I truly don’t want to hear that they lost out on someone that Zaidi wants because of money concerns.

I prefer a prudent, conservative approach.  Spending money and “winning the hot stove” is meaningless unless it produces wins next summer.  San Diego found out the hard way that spending tons of money does not necessarily results in more wins.  In other words, chasing high dollar free agents is generally a fool’s errand (see Stanton - I was thrilled when he chose New York).  

The best approach - signing free agents who can compliment the existing group of players and fit into the culture of the team.  

I expect to see a couple starting pitchers sign. Scherzer and Verlander?  I hope not.  How about Stroman and Wacha along with retaining Gausman?

You use the Padres as an example.  I use the Dodgers. I trust Zaidi to use money wisely.  I just want him to be given plenty of it.  Why would any fan want anything different?  It ain’t our money.

Obviously he will have a budget. If paying X to someone means he can’t do other things that he wants to do, then of course I’d expect him to bow out of the negotiations for X.  BUT, I don’t want his hands tied.

What the Giants  achieved this year is remarkable.  But ultimately not sustainable.  Along with all the bargain picks, I want them to sign a whale or two.

As for Scherzer and Verlander, probably “no” cause of age and injuries (I wonder if Scherzers issue was and is more than a “tired arm”). Although at the end of the day, how much and for how long.  If I can get Verlander cheap, for example, maybe I take a flyer.

Sure - sign Gausman, Wacha and Stroman. Resign Belt. (I expect he will reject the QO) Add Semien and Marte.  That would be a great off season….

Finally, on the Padres - this year was a train wreck.  But let’s see what they do in ‘22 with a good manager at the helm.  They have their high payroll core back.  And I expect them to be players this off season.
