A more astute writer might have observed how USC coaches, with the exception of Pete Carroll, have failed to live up to the outsized expectations of the fans and alumni for the last 40 years. Ted Tollner, Larry Smith, John Robinson Part 2, Paul Hackett, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Clay Helton. None of them has left a lasting mark of success. Maybe there is something wrong with the institution, rather than the coaches themselves.

Still . . . in your heart of hearts . . . don't you want SC to keep Helton for as long as possible?  As a Stanford fan, I do.

Oh most assuredly. I had nearly forgotten what schadenfreude felt like until Saturday night. It was very therapeutic.

Yes, of course we want Helton to do just well enough not to be replaced.  The concern is that they might fall into a good coach by accident.
