They also have the fifth highest attendance in MLB, about 50% north of SF's attendance. SF, BTW, is the nation's 17th largest city and #17 in MLB in attendance:

Most people use MSAs (metropolitan statistical areas) rather than city populations for these comparisons. It's misleading to simply compare San Francisco's and San Diego's populations since their sports teams draw from a wider fan base, and the SF Bay Area is significantly larger than the San Diego area. Of course the SF Bay Area supports two MLB teams while the Padres have the SD market to themselves. And I also agree that San Diego is by no means a small market, even though it's MSA ranks 17th in the US.
