I mean, it makes sense if you have a situation like: up by 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs. A walk moves the tying run from second to third, but a base hit means that the tying run is likely plated. At that point, you are merely trying to maximize the probability of getting the last out of the game, and letting Bonds hit the ball in play is not how you do that.
