And Jim Keating of Commerce High and State beat a horse in a race in the City in the 40's. perhaps the greatest all around athlete to come out of SF. Tore up the old California League but quit baseball because he made more money teaching PE at Everett JHS and coaching SI baseball.
DC mentioned Patton as to the American commander. He competed (5th) in the old Moderne Pentathlon in 1912. I think it was still an event into the 70's.
