Most grad transfers have one year of eligibility left. If the SA enrolls in a multi-year graduate program, after playing that one year, (a) schools that care about graduation rates no longer have an official "hook" to check on the SA's academic progress and (b) schools that don't care about graduation rates will be happy to wash their hands off the matter.

Figuring out the transfer portal is very important for Stanford. Like it or not, and in full disclosure i don’t, it is here and here to stay. It will either be a negative to Stanford Women’s basketball as it steadily drains depth as slower developing or “play me now” players move, or provide an important Avenue to fill gaps in our talent.  The former will happen and that’s a fact.

If Stanford can find a way to take advantage of the value of a Stanford degree or of a year spent here, we would be a prime landing place for women who may not see a career in the WNBA or who want a year of play with a top team to get there .  You won’t get Brianna Stewart’s this way but you could get Jordan Hamilton’s and that will give coaches another tool to replenish transfer stock or fill gaps.

This transfer in is an important step for the future of Stanford Women’s basketball. Not because of the talent of Hamilton ( pretty darn good IMHO) but as a signal to all graduating Srs with eligibility left to be sure and call Stanford.
