I certainly could have used a lot more maturity as an 18 yr old freshman, and given time and proper environment, maybe Rosen would have learned to channel his arrogant energy into more productive channels. Then again, some kids also don't ever learn. (I remember Rosen and his hot tub antics.)I repeat this over and over. For some reason, it never seems to "take". Rosen was dead set that he was going to start as a freshman. That was a requirement for him to get to the NFL as quickly as possible. Shaw wouldn't guarantee that. End of story. There are undoubtedly other factors that may have led Shaw not to offer, but the fact is Shaw wouldn't offer a guaranteed starting position as a freshman. Rosen made it clear that was a disqualifying issue. No point in Shaw making an offer that won't be accepted, dream school or not.
Mora did make such a guarantee, Rosen enrolled early at UCLA (which he could not have done have done at Stanford) and started as a freshman. Rosen has stated several times that starting as a freshman was a requirement for him. This is not a secret.
