I would think if he had some value that somebody would have reeled him in by now. Realistically, I wish he would just pursue a real career in pediatrics of something related. You know, something he could do for the next "40 years" and make a real difference in peoples' lives?
In addition, it may be counter to his financial interests at this point to return to a football camp. He presumably purchased an insurance policy for "loss of value" in 2018. See this NCAA whitepaper for details. (I'm not quite sure if the "permanent total disability" claim kicks in after "loss of value," but it probably doesn't make a difference to the rest of my argument.)
Bryce dropped from a ~2nd round grade prior to the 2018 season to the 4th round after the injury. In his case, the likely coverage amount could have been as much as $4-5M, or 60% of his expected contract value. (I'm assuming there's some significant discounting of non-guaranteed money, but I don't really know. Several sources suggest that most policies for 1st/2nd rounders range around $5M of coverage.)
During his two seasons, Bryce earned $1.65M from the WFT. (Good for him!) I'm speculating that he can close the book permanently on football and make himself eligible for the full balance of the loss of value and/or disability payout.
If this is true, playing at the NFL minimum or on a practice squad would be irrational. It would require very high confidence that he could work his way into a more substantial contract with a decent signing bonus. This involves (a) staying healthy enough, presuming that he is healthy enough now, which is a big assumption; (b) beating out other qualified, talented, healthy players for the opportunity; and ( c ) being on the right team and in the right situation to perform. (See Bryce's performance at Stanford in 2018 vs. 2017 for a reminder that the surrounding cast matters!)
While I, as a fan, would greatly enjoy seeing him play again, it probably makes no sense for him unless he truly can't live without pursuing his football dream.
Even if you disagree with my speculation about how these insurance policies really work, I think he'd reasonably require some guaranteed money up-front. I doubt any team will offer that, but I hope to be wrong.
On the bright side, you don't have to feel too sorry for him - he's made some good money already!
