Spiny_Norman, neither Cal nor Oregon State were particularly great defenses last year:

Cal was 7th in the conference in yards/play and gave up a terrible 7.6 yards/attempt passing-wise. (Comparatively, we gave up 7.56 YPA).

Oregon State was 6th in the conference in yards/play and gave up 6.85 YPA.

The best defenses in the conference were Oregon\'s and Arizona State\'s, both of which Luck lit up. Luck\'s ability can dominate good teams as well as bad.
