It looks like plasma from patients who recover from COVID-19 can help stop viral shedding, but doesn't seem to prevent death from COVID-19 complications in critically ill patients. Probably because at that point, the damage is not being done by the virus, but by an overactive immune response.
Earlier administration might help, but it is hard to figure out early in the course who will become critically ill and who will have a mild course.

This is the same dilemma that would happen with Remdesivir and other drugs. They only work if used on early disease development. We don't know who is going to develop symptoms on which it will work, or if it will work on those selected to get it.
