Our new men's coach has landed perhaps the #1 class, with recruits ranked by Swim Swam:
11 (number one fly), 13 (number one 200 breast), 14, 16, and 19,
plus an immediate NCAA title contender
in Russian Andre Minakov, the 100 fly silver medalist in the most recent World Championships.
On the women's side,
Stanford brings in the most dominant junior woman's swimmer since Ledecky, Regan Smith.
She's ranked first in the 100, 200, and 500 free; the 100 and 200 back; and the 200 fly.
As mentioned, Stanford also has a commitment from Lillie Nordman,
the #6 recruit in the class,
plus a fast riser at #22
who could move up significantly in the rankings.
Texas brings in #3 and #7, Virginia #2, 9, 11, and 13.
Cal's only top 20 recruit currently ranks at #4.
SC is the only other conference school with a ranked recruit (#11).
On the men's side, no other Pac 12 school signed a top 20 recruit.
Virginia is going to be our biggest competition in the coming years, with this year's No. 1 recruit in speedster Kate Douglas and next year's No. 2 recruit in Alex Walsh. She is as big of a recruit as Smith, not necessarily from a long-course perspective, but from a short-course one. She will be an immediate impact on the NCAA level, just like Smith. And the following year, the Cavaliers bring in Gretchen Walsh, Alex's sister, who is the consensus No. 1 recruit as a junior and also a top freestyle prospect. They will be tough in all relays, along with having several title contenders in Douglas and Walsh squared.
