Alums coaching across the Bay are not uncommon. The main reason - there is a job opening! #2 - geographic comfort. West coast athletes are like other grads. They like staying in the area.

In an interview last year, Lauren Greif said, "I feel very much at home at Stanford and in Cardinal Red."
It goes both ways. Stanford alum David Esquer (who was the starting shortstop on the 1987 Stanford national championship team) will soon begin his 13th year as the coach of the B.ears baseball team.
I live in LA where you see less cross-over among coaches. UCLA alum Ken Norton Jr who coached at USC under Carroll is the only one I can recall.
