You can say that they should have seen hecwas less than effective and pulled him. But that’s his QB. The guy they planned to ride. So easy to make the call from the couch.
Let’s go to the NFL. Cam Newton. Played two games with bad foot. Was AWFUL. Said he was good to go. Probably cost Panthers at least 1 game. He was actually hurt worse then he let on. I think that is somewhat common. These guys are competitors They think they are letting team down if they don’t play.
Yes we can easily say Shaw should have pulled Costello. When it’s the coaches decision, not quite as easy.

From the standpoint of a head coach, at least some consideration needs to be made for building the self-confidence of your quarterback, and jerking them in and out of games could ruin that and make things worse, so I understand the reluctance.
Those calls were based on performance over more than one game. This is due to an injury. There's no doubt that the coaches knew he injured his thumb, and it was clear that Costello couldn't push the ball downfield. That he's out this week also shows the error in that judgment.
or the injury got worse after the game, who here has injured something that seemed minor at the time only to realize the next morning that maybe it was worse than you thought, my worst example of this was a broken arm, it hurt a bit when injured, when I woke up the next morning it was pretty clear something was really not right
but I'm in the camp that he was not throwing well after he hurt his hand and I think we should have gone to Mills
