He was great, but it's a really good year for tight ends. Here are the stat lines for Ertz, the two guys that made All-Pro ahead of him (Kelce and Kittle), and a couple of other good TEs this year.
Zach Ertz, PHI: 116 receptions for 1,163 yards (10.0 avg/reception), 8 TDs
Travis Kelce, KC: 103 receptions for 1,336 yards (13.0 avg/reception), 10 TDs
George Kittle, SF: 88 receptions for 1,377 yards (15.6 avg/reception), 5 TDs
Jared Cook, OAK: 68 receptions for 896 yards (13.2 avg/reception), 6 TDs
Eric Ebron: 66 receptions for 750 yards (11.4 avg/reception), 13 TDs
Kelce was such a big part of the most explosive offense in the league that it's hard to begrudge him the first-team honor. There's a good case for Ertz over Kittle (receptions and touchdowns), but man alive, Kittle's 15.6-yard average per reception is nuts, so it's not exactly a robbery. Cook and Ebron also had standout years. At least Ertz made the Pro Bowl (as did Kelce, Kittle, and Ebron). Interestingly, Ertz's 10.5 votes for All-Pro were third at his position, but many more than guys who made the second team at other positions.
