Shaw may want the NFL, but does the NFL want Shaw? He’s now failed to win 10 games 3 straight seasons and it is objectively clear he has slipped and hasn’t found a way to get back on top.
I agree Shaw should go now because next year’s schedule is even more brutal than this year’s. Trade SDSU for at UCF and UC Davis for Northwestern, and then Notre Dame, and the conference slate. Truly insane for a program to do this to itself.
Isn't it possible Shaw's name isn't being tossed around because he has never shown any interest in the NFL and teams are getting tired of asking?
As far as next year's schedule is concerned, I suspect these games were scheduled when Northwestern and UCF weren't nearly as strong as they are now.
So to say it was insanity because they have become powerful isn't terribly accurate.
You're kidding, right? Since when has not showing interest ever stopped a name from being bandied about? Shaw is not being mentioned now because the bloom is off his rose because he has clearly slipped. That doesn't necessarily mean he isn't as a good as he was when his name was getting thrown out, but perception is reality. Big difference in perceived value when you have your team in the Fiesta and Rose Bowls as opposed to the Sun and Alamo Bowls.
I don't have a problem with scheduling Northwestern, but Stanford should NEVER schedule a home and home with a Group of 5 school from Florida. Stanford should get out of that game. No school in the country will play Three Top 20 teams from the previous season OOC. Why the hell should Stanford?
To be honest with you, I don't follow the NFL enough to know when names are being bandied about or not.
If Shaw really wanted an NFL job, I would be surprised if he couldn't get one. Sure he isn't as hot as he was three or four years ago.
Hey, Denny Green, got one with an 8-4 record.
Green got his NFL gig in part because he was from the Walsh coaching tree - all the rage in the early 1990s - and because he turned the Stanford program around himself. Shaw took over from Jim Harbaugh a program that was already turned around. If Shaw had taken Stanford from 4-8 to 8-4, he'd be much more coveted by the NFL than he seems to be right now.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe David Shaw could get an NFL HC job now even if he wanted one. His teams haven't done anything especially impressive in three seasons. The fact Pat Fitzgerald is in demand by the NFL is a bit surprising to me. Brian Kelly is a college coach more coveted by the NFL than Shaw is also.
Well, like I said I don't follow the NFL that much so you could be right.
I do know that once upon a time Stanford was considered such a difficult place to consistently win at that some one with Shaw's coaching record would definitely be in demand in the NFL, even though he's gone three years without going to a major bowl game. It's possible, I suppose, that it is no longer true.
