So, every scholarship singles player advanced to the Round of 32 except for Yee, who had the bad luck to draw Cal’s Olivia Hauger in the second round. And now that we’ve mostly gotten through the UOPs and Sac States of the world (still a few more in this round), the real matches start.
Round of 32 (all matches at 10:30):
(9) Lampl vs. Jessica Walker (UC Davis) (winner will likely get top seed Stacey Fung of UW this afternoon)
Choy vs. (9) Daniela Nasser (Oregon) (winner will likely get (6) Rosenqvist of Cal this afternoon)
(3) Lord vs. Katarina Kopcalic (UW) (winner will likely get (9) Kozyreva of St. Mary’s this afternoon)
(9) Higuchi vs. Lourdes Ramalle (Portland) (winner will likely get (8) Hauger of Cal this afternoon)
(4) Arbuthnott vs. Aubane Ville (St. Mary’s)(winner will get an unseeded player)
(9) Shin vs. Jelena Lukic (Portland) (winner will likely get (5) Wong from UW this afternoon)
(9) Madurawe vs. Kimberley Bhunu (Portland) (winner will likely get (7) Anna Bright of Cal this afternoon)
(2) Gordon vs. Delara Zamani (UW) (winner will likely get (9) Sangwan of Oregon this afternoon
The Round of 16 matches will start at 1:30 this afternoon, with the quarterfinals tomorrow. I’d expect Madurawe to beat a player like this, but she needed three long sets yesterday, so she may be tired. Remember that Gordon likely locks up an at-large bid to Fall Nationals with two wins today.
Choy has the toughest match in this round, as Nasser took Lampl to the limit in last year’s dual match, with Lampl winning 7-6, 7-5. UW’s Kopcalic gave Higuchi a tough match last year, with Higuchi needing a third set (though she rolled in it), and Shin was about to beat her at Pac-12s, up 6-2, 5-4 when the match was clinched. But we’re mostly past the matches where we’ll just outclass opponents. Lord will have to work a little in this one, though she should still win comfortably.
In doubles, all three teams are playing now, and I’d expect all three to win, with the Round of 16 coming tomorrow.
Indeed, doubles went just fine:
(3) Lord/Shin d. Bryant/van Ebbe (UC Davis), 8-2
(4) Madurawe/Yee d. Lee/Nederstigt (UOP), 8-1
Higuchi/Choy d. Day/Ketels (Gonzaga), 8-2
Up next is the Round of 16 tomorrow morning at 10:00am:
(3) Lord/Shin vs. Boyden/Olyphant (Cal Poly)
(4) Madurawe/Yee vs. Smith/Stloukalova (Cal)
Higuchi/Choy vs. Borjeson/Colyer (USF)
With wins, they'd advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow at 2:00pm, with Lord/Shin likely facing Cal's Bright/Dunk (the 7 seed), Higuchi/Choy likely facing Eshet/Sangwan of Oregon (the 2 seed), and Madurawe/Yee facing Gonzaga's Garley/Rosas.
