Let me point out that the SAT and ACT are very different tests.  The SAT tries (they stopped admitting this a while ago when ETS came under all the \'cultural\' issues attack) to measure potential or in the bad word, aptitude.  The ACT measures crystalized knowledge (specific things like when did Columbus sail the ocean blue?).  The results of the tests often are quite different.  That this great kid took the ACT and did less than one would expect from his grades suggest that something is wrong.  After all, didn\'t he get that 5.0 by largely taking (class) standardized tests?

That athletes get breaks from HS teachers is not uncommon.  That\'s why standardized tests are an important part (but only a part) of the selection criteria.

Let me also note that studies done by ETS show that the SAT has been the strongest predictor of later academic performance.  Combine that with grade history and it is really pretty good.  But then it should be because they are testing what people largely do in college (and that too may be culturally biased).
