Fall football camp opens! So, before we have something substantive to talk and speculate about, I\'d like to thank the people who made the absence of Actual Football much more endurable this year.
Reggie Bush. Shame on America for not so honoring him earlier, but I don\'t think any one of us could do more to sabotage the USC football machine.
Unless...nominated for best performance in a supporting role: The USC Athletic Dept. & Football Staff. Their recipe of arrogance mixed with ethical dry rot was unforgettable. Pete Carroll skedadled and will not come within a thousand miles of this stinking heap, so here to accept on behalf of Pete is his boss and former Ath. Director Mike Garrett. Thanks for the memories, Mike. Wouldn\'t have happened without your very special touch.
Stanford Women\'s basketball. Even I turned on the NCAA games and I can barely stay awake through most basketball.
Lane Kiffin Say what you will, the man is no flash in the pan. You woulda\' thought his scorched-earth exit from Tennessee and runaway mouth would have calmed down once he got to South Central, but the man just keeps on giving.
The Oregon football program. What can you say about a whole enterprise devoted to walking into every swinging door in sight? Masoli finally spit out of the organization while another RB kicked off a team for criminal problems in Texas is welcomed to Eugene.
The UC Berzerkley Athletic Dept. Who else could put together such impressive strings: 51 years without a Rose Bowl team and an unbroken streak of million dollar deficits funded by the taxpayers? Even better: most criticism on the Cardboard could be dismissed as just carping by a rival, but by annually ****ing up their finances, they legitimize our scathing remarks because as taxpayers they are sticking it to us.
The NCAA for discovering its own cojones rattling around down there. But even so, they are indebted to our two lead-off award winners without whom cojones discovery would have been unlikely.
Jim Harbaugh: Never has following recruiting been so lively in the same time of year. Turn away your attention for an instant and--BAM!!-- another RB or TE has committed. We are going to miss him when Michigan comes to its senses.
Stanford Women\'s Tennis and Men\'s Volleyball: National championships. Proving we don\'t run completely on Schadenfreude.
Thanks to all our award winners. It would have been a long, l-o-n-g offseason without you. Any other nominations for helping us through to this coming football season? Buehler? Buehler? Anyone?
