Finally got a chance to rewatch the game, specifically to see why the lead slipped (details below) As everyone agrees, WSU did much better in the second half. IMO, Stanford did not do much worse, but instead played to learn rather than to preserve the lead. I think Tara used this game to get more experience by some of the younger players. If you learn from you errors, some should have learned a lot.Â
In the runaway fast break, Carrington's foot, and then knee, did contact the WSU player's foot, resulting in the WSU player's foot hitting her other foot and taking her down. It was the proper call.
The 3rd quarter was played pretty well by both teams. It was late (1:11) in the 3rd when Swedlund sprained her ankle, and the refs clearly blew the call by awarding it to WSU, when Stanford was never near the ball at the obvious deflection by Swedlund. The official on the end line indicated he didn't see it. The one in front of Tara clearly miscalled when he awarded it to WSU. I'm expect Tara's comment to him (which is unusual for her to comment to the official that way) was, if you didn't see it, call a jump ball. Officials may not see everything, but they should admit it when they don't.
We were up by 28 at that point, and that was the beginning of the slide.
A minute later, with 6.8 on the clock and Stanford up 26, Alanna was waiting for a defensive rebound, when WSU's #5 slammed right through her, knocking her to the floor and taking her position. The end-line official was watching the ball in the air. Then he called a foul (#2) on Alanna on the rebound. I guess that's because she had her hand above her body, but that's where that WSU player was now.  (Btw, that inbounds play was one where the ball was thrown to the uncovered player at the elbow. She missed the unguarded shot, which I thought was a poor play by Stanford with < 6 seconds on the clock.)
4th Q
9:49 Good backdoor cut by Britanny and a feed from Marta result in a great interior pass to Alanna for an easy layup.  +28
9:25 Good defense results in a tough shot by WSU, but WSU stays home for the O rebound.
9:09 A contested 12' shot misses. Alanna and Brittany tangle on the rebound, resulting in its winding up in WSU's hands for a O rebound and a quick layup +26
8:41 Marta is playing at the block, then gets the ball near the elbow. She attempts to feed it to Brittany, but it is deflected. Brittany manages to get it, but has had to change her drive. She goes up for the shot anyway, and it is blocked. It comes down to WSU.
8;35 In transition, Kiana is on the dribbler but not in front of her. Marta is in front but doesn't stop the dribbler with a weak wave. WSU takes it straight in for a driving layup.
Kiana is called for a foul - there is no arm contact and very little body contact, if any. +23
8:29 Marta, with defender trailing, hands the ball to Britanny on the sideline. Marta's defender arm pulls Britanny's left arm off the ball and the ball falls out of bounds. The official (right on top of the play) improperly calls an out-of-bounds in favor of Stanford, even though WSU never touched the ball. It should have been a foul, or WSU's ball.
8:06 We pass the ball from covered player to covered player around the perimeter. It winds up in the hands of Brittany at 0:08. There are 2 players between her & the basket (Maya's defender has sloughed off into the paint. Maya is inside the 3 on the baseline. I can see why Brittany didn't choose to drive.) Brittany seems stuck on passing in to Alanna, but Alanna has 5 defenders around her. My opinion is that a pass to Maya is the right option. But Brittany does finally get it into a double teamed Alanna who struggles to get control. She puts it in +25
7:52 Hristova is guarded by Britanny. She does a great move from the 3pt, with a spin from the FT line. The official calls a foul, but replay clearly indicates there was no contact to arm or body (except out at the free throw line, before she started the shot) by anyone. The ref called the foul on Brittany (#1) 1/2 FTs +24
7:41 Marta takes the ball to the hoop herself, with a bit of a circus, one-hand shot that went in. (We did have a rebounder in place) +26
7:24 Alanna deflects a pass in the lane and we get a steal.
7:18 In transition, Alanna takes a wide open 3, and misses. Maya was in good rebounding position, but the ball comes down to WSU.
7:00 Halley drives on Kiana and scores. +24
6:38 Kiana tries a pass to a double-teamed Alanna. The ball goes out on a WSU player.yl.
Kiana's inbound pass is deflected and rolls through Brittany's legs. (Ridiculously, the TO is charged to Brittany.)
Brittany & Kiana react slowly. WSU gets a 2 on 1 (Alanna) break, but Maya catches up & knocks the ball out of bounds.
6:28 Our 2-person on the inbounder play lets their top scorer get the ball at the foul line, but she misses the shot. WSU is aggressive to get OR and does get one, but not a second.
6:18 Alanna drives the floor and passes to Brittany. Britanny drives toward the clogged center of the lane and gets cut off. She makes a desperation pass intended for very far trailing Kiana, but it is deflected and stolen.
6:15 Two on 1 (Kiana) break with Hristrova with the ball. Kiana stays in the middle to stop the pass and Hristrova takes it to the hoop. Hristrova misses the layup but Kiana gets called for the foul with the body. 2/2 FTs  +22
At this point Stanford has Dijonai, Britanny, Kiana, Shannon, Kaylee
6:05Â Shannon gets called for sticking her arm out and the defender runs through it.
5:57 Hristova tries a challenged (my Britanny) fall-away shot from 10' and misses. Rebound to Dijonai.
5:40 Shannon is beyond the 3-pt line and gets the ball. She attempts to feed it to Kaylee but Kaylee doesn't step out to take the bad pass, and it sails on past to Hristova.
5:33 Hristova takes it on a fast-break for a lay-up, defended by Kiana & Brittany but both wisely decide not to foul. +20
