Some quotes from the press conference. Tara brought Kaylee and Alanna along.
Tara opened by saying we had a good first half and praising Kayl's rebounding, the all around play of Kayl and Alanna, Britt for her defense on #45, gave WSU credit for their effort in the second half, and concluded "It is kind of the story of two halves. Our first half was great and the second half we have to talk about."
Kaylee:Â "We were all disappointed in our last game and we were excited to be back on the court and wanted to take advantage of it, to come out with energy, that was a big focus, but like Tara said we need to piece it together with the second half."
Alanna: "Kayl is one of the players on our team who is consistently getting rebounds--you can rely on her to get boards--and I think more people on our team need to get on board with that too. We all look to Kayl as the leader on the team and she set a great example in that respect."
Tara was asked about Kiana. "She's been doing really well. In my mind she is not a freshman. She is our starting 2 and our backup 1, and sometimes we play her at the 1 and she does really well. She's learning every game, she's very coachable, she is someone who wants to play well and wants to be a great player. She puts in extra time working on her shot, I think she's doing extremely well."
Asked about the turnovers and steals: "We need people to take care of the ball better. I would give them credit, they got aggressive, they got in passing lanes, but we were sloppy....I don't think it should matter what the lead is or what you are down, you can either play against their defense or you can't....we need people who are going to get assists and not turnovers."Â
Kayl asked again about the contrast between ASU and WSU rebounding and how they reversed the situation: "We were just very inspired. We had consequences for not rebounding and we didn't want it to happen again. We know we can't wait to lose a game like that and go 'Oh we have to rebound' we need to be consistent, but we needed that reminder, we got it, and hopefully we don't get it again the rest of the season."
Tara asked about Marta complimented her defense, her layup, but declined to criticize her specifically. The earlier comment about needing people to get assists and not turnovers was probably critical enough.
