Locally (Palo Alto and environs), girls basketball is a dying sport, losing ground to lacrosse, volleyball, water polo, softball and soccer.

That is my impression too.  My dentist is the LaCrosse coach here and there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm.  If that is going on all over the wealthy suburbs of America then it is a problem for Stanford WBB.

Of course, that could be a phenomenon like gymnastics--that the clubs are still very good but the schools play second fiddle.  That is certainly true for soccer.
