I'm not sure about that chart - it needs a fourth dimension - time left and a Fifth Dimension - game situation.
If I'm reading that chart right, you should always go for it on 4th and 1 inside your own 5. Good luck on the Monday morning talk shows.....
As to the three 4th downs in question, my own hindsight / couch coaching said that at least two of the three punts were the right call.
1. 4th and 10 at WSU 37 trailing by 7 in 2nd quarter. A 54-yard FG attempt in the cold? Nah. Right call. Pinned at the 4 is a good outcome.
2. 4th and 1 at own 47 leading by 4 in 4th quarter. Tempting, but lots of runs for loss that day and not letting Costello sling it. Pinned at the 6 is a good outcome and resulted in a 3rd and 14. Sure if you had known the defense would give up a 94 yard drive, roll the dice, but you don't know that.
3. 4th and 7 at WSU 48. Yeah it was getting late, but enough time and 2 time outs to get a stop. Not the best punt coverage, IIRC or they would have been pinned inside the 5, which is still a good outcome. Borderline call, but you should be able to have faith in your punting, coverage and defense. Really good chance they don't pick up those 7 yards and then you are really behind the 8-ball just due to field position; which is where they wound up anyway, but this is a tough call to criticize IMO.
P.S. Always need the Fifth Dimension, particularly after these tough losses.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working .I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. Peter Gibbons
