Yeah, that's a feature of the Shaw offense that I've never been terribly warm about. The offense simply doesn't run enough plays, in my opinion. And the pace of the team has been declining over time:
2011: 71.9 plays/game
2012: 67.7 plays/game
2013: 63.9 plays/game
2014: 66 plays/game
2015: 66.2 plays/game
2016: 63.6 plays/game
2017: 58.5 plays/game
Now, on some level the number of plays isn't correlated with offensive quality. On the other hand, it's just weird plays per game keeps on tumbling and the team just does so little per game now. If Shaw wants to get his players more opportunities, and feels like he's "one block away," one way of overcoming that kind of variance is...giving yourself a bigger sample size to do it in.
