If the patella did dislocate, the best case I think is still isolated simple patellar dislocation. Treatment is reduction of the dislocation, which usually requires muscle relaxants. Evaluate for fractures and ligamentous injury. May also evaluate for anatomical factors that may predispose to dislocation. Then rehab, strengthen muscles, wear knee brace when return to play (which can be as soon as 4-6 weeks, maybe longer for a football player). Will always be more predisposed to repeat dislocation. That to me is best case scenario. But of course he could have more than just a simple patellar dislocation, or something different entirely; I'm just hoping for the best case if there is a patellar dislocation.
(note: a patellar dislocation is different from a knee dislocation, which would definitely involve tearing of multiple major ligaments)
Probably true, though it looked more dramatic than just a patellar dislocation. But I am not an orthopedic surgeon either. You are right that a simple dislocation would be the best case scenario.
