With respect to the playoffs point raised by the article, Shaw's career has been screwed a bit by the order. Let's say you flipped the order of his teams such that 2014 was 2011, etc. (i.e. so the 2011-13 teams would have actually occurred more recently). Shaw probably would've gone to the playoffs at least once, if not multiple times, in this scenario.

He kind of referenced that, point out that luck is definitely involved. Some years an early loss hasn't mattered for one of the teams that got in, but some years Stanford has been burned by that. Aside from being good, lots of other things have to turn out the right way to claim one of those four slots.
