I made note of the number as well, but it makes perfect sense. The message isn't to McCaffrey that his number won't be retired, it's a message to Wedington -- We want you, and we think you're the next McCaffrey.

After Luck left, someone asked Shaw if #12 would be worn by anyone, and he responded, "Not yet. That number's still a little bit hot right now. We'll let it cool off a bit." I'd expect the same thing with #5.

I don't think Stanford football would have sent the painting out if there were no possibility of his wearing it.
