What's our situation with McCaffrey? Does he not have the grades? Does he have the grades but he came to camp and just didn't impress as much as the other guys?
No idea on the grades, but I'm fairly sure Dylan McCaffrey camped along with Davis Mills and Jake Bentley (among others, I'm sure), but that after evaluating those guys and others, Stanford offered Mills and Bentley, but not McCaffrey.Â
The offer lists are interesting to watch right now: McCaffrey has 15 reported offers on Rivals, with his best offers (football-wise) being Michigan, LSU, and UCLA. Mills has 24, with his best offers being us (obviously), Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, Miami, and Ole Miss. Bentley has 14, with his best offers being us, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina. Bailey Hockman (who self-reported as having an offer, but isn't universally regarded as having one) has 14, with his best offers being Alabama, FSU, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, and Tennessee.Â
FYI, of these four guys (Bentley and Mills with solid offers, Hockman with an uncertain offer, and McCaffrey with no offer but nice bloodlines), here are the current recruiting rankings, which show some pretty wide swings between services (I suspect that will shrink a little as more Opening/Elite 11 type evaluations occur and more offers come out):
Mills:
- Rivals: #2 pro-style QB/#22 recruit overall
- Scout: #11 QB/#101 recruit overall
- ESPN: #9 QB-PP/#180 recruit overall
- 247: #6 pro-style QB/#98 recruit overall
Bentley:
- Rivals: #9 pro-style QB/#174 recruit overall
- Scout: #6 QB/#70 recruit overall
- ESPN: #2 QB-PP/#33 recruit overall
- 247: #4 pro-style QB/#83 overall
McCaffrey:
- Rivals: #6 dual-threat QB/#114 recruit overall
- Scout: #3 QB/#39 recruit overall
- ESPN: #1 QB-PP/#25 recruit overall
- 247: #2 pro-style QB/#46 recruit overall
Hockman:
- Rivals: #11 pro-styleQB/#214 recruit overall
- Scout: #19 QB/#225 recruit overall
- ESPN: #4 QB-PP/#41 recruit overall
- 247: #5 pro-style QB/#91 recruit overall
So, Rivals thinks Mills is clearly the class of the group with the other three way behind, Scout thinks it's McCaffrey with Hockman way back in the pack, ESPN also thinks it's McCaffrey (but with Bentley and Hockman close, and Mills way back in the pack), and 247 sees all 4 guys as solid and all top 100, but with McCaffrey having an edge. In other words, who knows? Whichever guy we pick (or picks us), at least one of the services will think we did very well. ;)
