I must say players leaving after 3 years stinks. I always thought Stanford was special. Players leaving LSU or Alabama after 3 years sort of made sense, they might not be great students and struggled to stay eligible and/or its just easy to go back pay cheap in-state tuition and finish their kinesiology degree. But when it came to Stanford a degree was worth any risk of playing college football for another year
Well, I wonder about that. Ever since I was a little kid, it was drummed into my head how critically important it is to graduate...and by and large, I agree with that assessment. I think for the vast majority of people, a degree (Stanford or not) is far preferable to no degree, and yes of course...a Stanford degree even more so.Â
I started to change my thinking in my mid-30s when I figured out what these 11 people had in common: Henry Ford, Mary Kay Ash, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Rachel Ray, Steven Spielberg, Mark Zuckerberg and John D. Rockefeller...didn't graduate college. And let's throw in Sam Walton, Amancio Ortega, Michele Ferrero, Francois Pinault, Ralph Lauren, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Ingvar Kamprad and Oprah Winfrey. Not only did they not graduate from college, they're all billionaires.
My younger son secured entrance at a well-known Ivy. He's very tight with several truly brilliant young tech entrepreneurs who want him to forego his last two years of college and join their company. Their list of advisors is a who's who of tech. Mrs. Mick has reluctantly agreed...I told him he'd be crazy not to do it.
And with athletes...their shelf life is short. I wish them good luck and godspeed. I tell them what I told my son, return and get your degree if at all possible.
