Grew up in LA basin.  Had been to the Coliseum and the USC campus...and the neighborhood they were in.  That was "urban" enough for me.  What a crap hole.  Also, the Watts riots < 2 yrs. previous.  Oddly,  not that turned off by Berkeley.  Maybe the topography,  the Bay views and hills buffered the shock.  Dodged that bullet, though.
