As far as I am aware, unlike many programs, Stanford encourages recruits to take visits to be sure Stanford is where they want to be, so taking visits isn't an issue. And if Stanford coaches encourage other visits, they probably also tell kids they know are potentially borderline for admission, to keep their options open. IMO, you don't commit to Stanford unless you really want to go there, because you know just because you commit it doesn't mean you are going there. So all this talk about making sure Stanford is the right place can more than likely be attributed to uncertainty about admissions. If Long is admitted, it's hard to imagine him going elsewhere. All this talk about positions and everything is just a smoke screen, IMO.Â
Very few recruits will put themselves in a position to make it clear that the only reason they don't choose Stanford is because they weren't admitted. Demetris Robertson is one of the rare exceptions. His approach seems much more sincere and the one I prefer; say Stanford is your top choice until it isn't. This is the same approach Jabrill Peppers took too.
