Or is the reality that Stanford players take "soft majors" like ST&S because they too really want to focus on sports, and they choose Stanford knowing that having a Stanford degree gives them a leg up on everyone else after sports are over?

Stanford athletes are heterogeneous, ranging the gamut from Frank Buncom to Casey Jacobson.  Obviously, the distribution curve at Stanford leans far more toward the academic side than it does at other schools, especially football factories like Oregon.
