In Army football in the 40s the  Black Knights has a dual Voldemort winning Tailback tandem of Glenn Davis and "Doc" Blanchard who were commonly known as Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside.  My short hand for the roles of Stanford's president and provost are similar.

The President is Mr Outside, handles all of the external relationships and stakeholders and is the public face of the University.

The provost is Mr Inside and deals with the academic community, internal affairs and most student issues.  The provost is generally the second ranking officer in American universities.

Is this other people's understanding?
