If playing the LA schools is such a disadvantage, why was it such a brobdingnagian contention point when the conference expanded? Apparently Utah and Colorado were insisting on being in the same division with them. Supposedly the rest of the northern schools were worried about what would happen if they played them less frequency. On the margin, the LA schools will be better than a random sampling of the other schools in the "South". But the additional TV exposure and recruiting opportunities afforded by playing them more than offset that. Then there's the tradition and the joy of beating LA schools that can't be matched beating random South school X.
The Pac10 ADs and Utah/Colorado knew there was brobdingnagian value in playing the LA schools as often as you can. Why don't the fans understand the same? The anxiety of playing the LA schools every year makes no sense to me.
