Last year a kid that got accepted to all 8 Ivys generated publicity.  This kid has topped him by also applying to and getting into Stanford.  He's narrowed it down to the Pilgrims, the Bulldogs, and the Trees.  He should host a press conference at his school and pick a hat.

There is another HS student from the same area of Long Island New York that got into all 8 Ivies this year too.  The article noted that he lived close to last year's all-Ivy guy.

The common application is to blame here really.  With the common app the acceptance rates have fallen to 5-10%.  Logically, these kids realize that they should apply to an even greater number of schools to improve their odds.  Applying to more schools is not that difficult because of the common application, but that only lowers the acceptance rates even more.  I guess the common application is good news for those seeking careers in college admissions offices.

If I was applying to schools I at this point I probably would apply to 20+ schools too.  The $75-$100 application fee per school would not really be a barrier.
