My memory is that if a recruited walk on gets any sort of financial aid, then he qualifies as a counter as soon as he appears in a game.

There are two cards to play here. One is that often schools work hard to have players NOT be recruited walk ons, so they don't fall under this rule. The second is a form of grey-shirting - the player with financial aid simply doesn't get into a game until a scholarship is available.

At least for Stanford, there are scholarships available - which seems to be our usual situation.
