One quibble: I don't think we should equate an extended offer the start of recruiting HS player. We can approach, chat, invite to camps, make Stanford's intentions known, provided he does his academic work and continues to develop his game as well. We do need to be doing this a lot: identifying players in their Freshman and Sophomore years who seem to have the requisite academic seriousness to do the work, and are also elite players. And worth talking to players who are elite and maybe willing to put in the work. But if, by the time they get to their Junior year, the student isn't doing the work, I doubt the light will suddenly go on and he'll become an ace student.
I assume that this is the process for our coaches. I don't know that an explicit offer coming a few months earlier in the process would make much of a difference.
