On a related note, here's a post I made yesterday to our local paper's forum in response to a question about academic ranking of highly ranked football schools:

While academic rankings, like football rankings, can be subjective, here is how some of the Top 25 AP preseason teams rank in a list recently published by Forbes magazine.

Alabama 205
Ohio State 138
Oregon 217
Stanford 1
Georgia 90
South Carolina 190
Texas A&M 122
LSU 179

Notre Dame 24
Michigan 30
Northwestern 17

The rankings are based on the following criteria:
Student Satisfaction (22.5%)
Post-Graduate Success (37.5%)
Student Debt (17.5%)
Graduation Rate (11.25%)
Nationally Competitive Awards (11.25%)

You can find the complete list here: http://www.forbes.com/top-colleges/list/

If you know anybody there, tell them it's never too late to transfer to Pomona.

Caltech gets dinged for a few reasons.  First is that their student population is tiny.  Secondly, you don't need that many raw resources to support such a tiny school, so they don't draw as much in the way of donations, fundraising efforts, etc.  Additionally, their alumni generally don't have stellar memories of Tech...it is a place where sharp minds are forged through extremely intense pressures, and those minds never forget the nature of those pressures.

Among my several Caltech friends, most (if not all) said they wouldn't encourage their kids to go to Caltech.  I, as the lone Stanford alum, said that I loved my school and would even do it all over again.  I got a few jealous stares--though they don't know how hard I made it on myself!

At least based on my experience, the myth that Northwestern has super high academic requirements for its football players is just that.
They showed a little interest (with little being the key operative word here) in my son a few years ago and we were told that they would like a recruit to have a two part SAT of 1,000 or more. It wasn't a hard and fast requirement, though. So unless they have significantly tightened things up in the last few years, I tend to think their requirements in football are similar to Duke's in basketball. Much more sizzle than steak.

My best friend, who I met at Stanford as a fellow transfer student, transferred from CalTech.  But he maintains close ties and actually has attended a CT reunion or two.  He describes his own experience and those of his CT friends kind of the way the survivors of the Battle of the Bulge describe theirs.  Deprivation, suffering, bonding with those who went through it so they understand what others can't.  I'm sure there are CalTech students who have a good experience.  I was working on the Pasadena newspaper when CalTech actually won a football game over the Claremont Mudd JVs.  Bonfire time!

Oh, I would do it all over again.  I'd change quite a few of the details, though.  Like not try to take it all on "alone".

I had an old high school friend and football teammate who went to CalTech. He said it was fine, never described it as an ordeal. Said his classmates were incredible nerds (he was a fairly normal guy), but once you got past that things were OK. He was on the football team and said it was a bit of a joke. You never knew who was going to show up to practice because people had labs or just wouldn't feel like coming.

He ended up as a math professor and spent some time at Under Stanford Control. He always used to complain because his blackboards would fall down. His comment was"I bet John Robinson's blackboards don't fall down."

Interestingly enough, I made friends very quickly with Caltech students.  My best friend from high school (my Tech connection) has always said I should have gone to Tech because I fit in so well there :p

I've been editing peoples' posts to change Cal Tech to CalTech in order to avoid the wrath of the board software. Hope that has been OK with you all.

I, for one, was really enjoying all those "Low APR U Tech" mentions.
