The ACC is poaching the very Atlantic and very Coastal Louisville from the Big East. Interesting because their coach is Charlie Strong -- a frequently mooted candidate for all sorts of jobs with pretensions of high class (i.e. 59ers). It might be interesting if the upgrade in conference is enough to keep Strong put in Louisville. If so, cross him off of the lists.

I feel bad for very eastern Boise, just joining the Big East conference in time for it to fall apart.

If coach Petersen decides the Boise merry-go-round isn't fun any more or the Big East affiliation is a career deep freeze,  he might pay more serious attention to the K.al opening.

I have to respectfully disagree on the effect of the Big East changes.  The BE will almost certainly retain its automatic BCS bid for a long time.  There is a rule by which they can lose it, but IIRC it takes years of being much worse than the other conferences (and Cincy finished #3 in the BCS just 3 years ago).  Given the defections, a decent Boise team could be looking at years of fairly easy Orange Bowl appearances and a great shot at the NC game in years where you don't have 2 big name schools with 0 or 1 loss.  WVU was in the same position and but for a few unlikely losses would have gone to the NC game ahead of (in my opinion) much better teams.  This might have been their year if they wouldn't have joined the B12.

It's already been announced that the Big East has lost their automatic bid in the new BCS/playoff regime that's about to begin in 2014.  Only the Pac-12, Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 will retain automatic bids for their champions.

The Big East, Mountain West, C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt get no automatic bids to the 6 games that will make up the new system.  Instead, the highest ranked champion from those "lesser" 5 conferences will get an autobid.

Thanks for this concise clarification. Will the 2 playoffs constitute 2 of these 6? Is it known whether playoffs will be called playoff games or will bowls rotate as playoffs? While I'm at it, if Kent St (or N. Illinois) qualify for bcs this year, does that knock the Big East out or Okla/Clemson?

Edit:  By the way, Utah St has one more loss than either Kent St or N. IL but look at Utah St's nonconf schedule: Utah, BYU and Wisc contrasted with that of the MAC teams. Too bad about Utah St's missed field goal at end of their Wisc game...

There is a chance the Big East won't get a team in the BCS bowls this year.  It is possible for Kent State or Northern Illinois to get the bid.  If the Big East champion doesn't get to #16 in the BCS rankings this could happen.

Louisville losing at home to UConn last week was brutal.  And ironically, those two teams seem headed out of the Big East to the ACC.

Poor Florida State.  They have to play an awful Georgia Tech team in the ACC championship game, and then when they win that, their reward is playing in the Orange Bowl against potentially Kent State or Northern Illinois, and at best Louisville or Rutgers.  Ugh.  Count me as one person who won't be watching the Orange Bowl.

Yes, the playoff semifinals will be 2 out of the 6 BCS games.  The 6 bowls will rotate hosting the semifinals.

As far as this year goes, I didn't know that the rule stating that a non-AQ champ gets a bid if it finishes (a) 16 or better in the final BCS rankings and (b) ahead of an AQ champ in the rankings gets that AQ champ's spot.  Are we sure about that?

I thought the Big East would still get their bid and the non-AQ team would just crowd out one of the at-large spots.  This year, that probably means Oklahoma.

This is right. The Big East keeps their spot, so Oklahoma is out. Florida/Rutgers in the sugar and Florida State (or GA TECH!!)/Kent State in the Orange.

If Northern Illinois beats Kent State, though, they might not get into the top 16.

I could swear I saw some ESPN talking heads saying the Big East may not get a BCS bid this year.  Anyway, whatever the case, this years' BCS games are providing yet another example of why the BCS system, designed to make the bowls less competitive to increase their value, was a brain dead idea.

Well, here are the rules.

I don't think I saw anything in there about the Big East being able to lose their automatic bid.
