Sept. 1 San Jose State at Stanford - Win(45-10)
Sept. 8 Duke at Stanford - Win (38-13)
Sept. 15 USC at Stanford - Loss (42-28)
Sept. 22 Bye
(Thursday) Sept. 27 Stanford at Washington - Win (41-28 - Would have been a closer score if Polk came back)
Oct. 6 Arizona at Stanford - Win (42-31- could be closer due to Rich Rodriguez's aerial attack)
Oct. 13 Stanford at Notre Dame - Win (27-20)
Oct. 20 Stanford at Cal - Win (34-24)
Oct. 27 Washington State at Stanford - Win (38-35 - This game will be very close Mike Leach's air raid could possibly doom us)
Nov. 3 Stanford at Colorado - Win (35-10)
Nov. 10 Oregon State at Stanford - Win (31-17)
Nov. 17 Stanford at Oregon - Loss (55-28 - Once again their speed is too much- that freshman De'Anthony Thomas is scary fast)
Nov. 24 Stanford at UCLA - Win (35-17)

This 10-2 season would probably be the best case scenario. We could drop games to Wazzu and/or Arizona because of our rebuilding secondary, and these offenses play to our weaknesses on defense. A more realistic scenario would be 9-3 or 8-4. The outcome of the UCLA game would also be pending based how Jim Mora performs in the previous 11 weeks.

I think our offense will feature more of the running back like in the 2009 season with Toby, which would help our QB get experience, very similar when Andrew started as a freshman. Andrew only attempted 288 passes in 2009, compared to 372 in 2010, and 373 in 2011. Stephan Taylor and Anthony Wilkerson will be our two main backs. Expect to see Ricky Seale to make some headway. I remember his good performance at the spring game last year. We have already figured out our #1 receiver which is Ty Montgomery, so whenever Nottingham/Picazo decides to throw it, we will have a deep threat to go to. I'm assuming our #2 receiver will most likely be Drew Terrell, he was the fourth leading receiver with 8 receptions (shows how much productivity we got out of our WRs this year) and was steady on fielding punts.

Defensively we look solid at the linebacker position, Skov, Lancaster, and Tarpley will be the anchors of the defense. Vaughters will get more playing time and hopefully Chase Thomas will return. Patrick Skov could also be in the mix but he is also plays fullback. Our line loses Masifilo, but Ben Gardner returns along with Terrence Stephens (whom importantly knocked the ball out in the SC game). Our rush defense already looks stellar without even playing a game! However our secondary takes a brobdingnagian hit. We lose Howell and Michael Thomas, both were good tacklers and kept our secondary from crumbling. Vying for those positions will be Devon Carrington, Myles Muagututia, and Ed Reynolds. Our cornerbacks are coming back with plenty of game experience. Terrence Brown, Barry Browning, Wayne Lyons, and Harold Bernard all have experience and will be contending for starting positions. Once the position battles at safety and cornerback are over, I think we will have another top-25 defense.

This year's recruiting class might get some early playing time. We already have 4 WRs commits and 3 of them them run a 4.5, so speed will not be a problem. However with the bust in Patterson, we know speed is not everything. None the less, these receivers look promising. I don't expect our incoming LBs to get much playing time because we are already loaded at that position, but pending an injury (knocking on wood), they could be thrust into action.

A 10-win season might seem a little ambitious but it is achievable. But a 9 or 8 win season sounds more probable. IMHO, a 7 or 6 win season would be a disappointing to me because of the amount of talent we have coming back and the expectations that Harbaugh and Shaw have built around this program.

I'll take a shot:

Sept. 1 San Jose State at Stanford - Solid Win
Sept. 8 Duke at Stanford - Solid Win
Sept. 15 the University of South Central at Stanford - Solid Loss (I'll hope for some magic, but will be tough in game three of the Nottingham era)
Sept. 22 Bye
(Thursday) Sept. 27 Stanford at Washington - Loss (this is a toss up in my opinion. KP seems like a good QB)
Oct. 6 Arizona at Stanford - Solid Win
Oct. 13 Stanford at the University of South Bend - Loss (South Bend is a tough place to play, esp for a rookie QB)
Oct. 20 Stanford at School near Oakland - Win (should be tight, but our D will pull it out)
Oct. 27 Washington State at Stanford - Solid Win (I'll take a wait and see on WSU)
Nov. 3 Stanford at Colorado - Solid Win
Nov. 10 Oregon State at Stanford - Solid Win
Nov. 17 Stanford at Oregon - Solid Loss
Nov. 24 Stanford at UCLA - Solid Win

I see 8-4 as the likely scenario as well.

I think this is a harder-than-usual season to predict, for two big reasons. One, the next QB--who is he and how good is he? Two, the coaching upheaval in the conference. You've got, what, four new head coaches? We're facing three of them next season. UW has made a major staff shakeup.

What if one of those three head coaches has a Harbaugh-esque impact on his team? What if UW's new defensive coordinator, Justin Wilcox, has a Vic Fangio type impact for UW? It's really hard to tell, which is why this season will be hard to tell.

I believe the OL scheme, the RBs and the defense are all worthy of Top 25 status.  I know the D looked bad against OSU, but they looked better than many other programs that were ranked in the Top 25 that played OSU this year.  The new Pac-12 coaches should enable Stanford to get some cheap wins because few new coaches with new systems can turn things around that quickly.  And new regimes usually have transition lapses that cost them a win or two.

So, I think I get to 9-3 IF the QB was a returning starter (Oregon, SC & a quality opponent to emerge during the course of the year would be the 3).  With a new starter at QB there are probably 2 more losses that could emerge just because...

So I would project the team between 8-4 and 7-5 with a bowl win and a Top 20 year end ranking.  9 or more would be outstanding.  A finish with 10 or more wins would be amazing, and would imply that 2013 could be BCS Title Game worthy.

FWIW - Thanks to Te.df.or.d staying near Oakland, I don't see that program becoming the emerging quality opponent that creates loss #3.
