That's odd in juxtaposition to Wilner citing Cal's improving APR as a reason to keep him.

Low APR U wants to keep him, but it doesn't look like he wants to stay.
I think he's getting out while he can. Goff is as good as gone, and they lose most of their skill players on offense to graduation. Low APR U has little chance of repeating this year's 7-5.

The reality is this:
1. Ca.l institutionally doesn't care about winning
2. Ca.l is at the bottom of the Pac-12 in coaching salaries
3. Ca.l has now raised entrance requirements for football and basketball players
4. Dyke.s may not be an elite coach, but Ca.l has made everything more difficult on him to be better
5. Ca.l is happy with Dyke.s, as it has major donors who are happy with 3-9 records and 95% grad rates
6. See #2 and #3, and #1 as to why Dyke.s isn't happy with Ca.l
That sums everything up in a nutshell.

Garvin,
The ONLY reason Ca.l did the facility renovations are these:
1. CMS was a legal liability and presented a cool engineering project to work on
2. The SAHPC is used for 14 different sports, not just football (no way they spend that scratch on a football-only facility)
Most Ca.l fans gag on the notion of "3-9/95" as it is now referred to, but there are in fact a handful or large and influential donors who really do believe this.

On the other hand, c.a.l. has neither of those two things.

It's now being reported (in DC) that Ca.l football has a 997 APR. The 3-9/95 donors are wetting themselves now. Bowl game and great APR? How could we possibly ask for more!

Doesn't that argument present a false dichotomy? It's the premise put forward by those who believe you can't graduate students AND play winning football - most B.ear fans who say this believe they are mutually exclusive goals. Are you in that camp?
In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

I care about Stanford football. I care about Kal, too, but not in a good way. I'm aware of the whole steel-sharpens-steel trope, where both sides in a competitive series of games only improves the whole conference. But, you know what? I'm more than happy to let us get sharpened by USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon and Notre Dame. But Kal can flounder all it wants without me shedding a tear. The school itself is a very high quality public university with high standards and a mission that serves California. (Except, of course, all the high-tuition paying out of staters who they need to pay the bills) But none of that pertains to the football program other than to make the Kal's football program an embarrassment. And that's fine with me. Let them flounder. I've suffered enough Kal working-class-hero crap to last a lifetime, so feeding it back to them in a humiliating fashion, loss after loss as time goes on doesn't bother me one bit. It appears that Yikes might be moving on. Bummer. I'd like to see him stay because in leaving raises the chances they might hire a good coach. Screw that.

Absolutely not in that camp. And yes, of course it's a false dichotomy.

I am skeptical of C.al's supposed 997 APR. C.al's athletic department has a history of releasing selected numbers to show academic progress, but those numbers don't seem to materialize in any of the NCAA's official reports.
The last NCAA report on APRs listed C.al football with an APR of 941, dead last in the Pac-12 conference.
That 941 APR, like all of the NCAA's published APRs, is a combined four-year figure. The relevant period for that APR goes through the 2013-2014 academic year.
It's possible to calculate an APR for one year, or even for one semester. According to a C.al blogger, C.al's APR for 2013-14 was 946.
I suppose it's possible that C.al had a 997 APR for a recent semester. But a one-semester or one-year APR is not the measure that counts. The NCAA's published four-year APR is the one that is used as a benchmark. I am skeptical that the NCAA will ever publish an official 997 APR for C.al.

Not-sorry Yikes has a buyout of $2 mil, right? Mizzou had better pony up if this happens...

Missouri passed on Dykes. They've hired the Mizzou defensive coordinator, Barry Odom.
Odom was also in line for the Memphis job after Justin Fuente left for Virginia Tech (he'd been DC there for three years); Memphis has now hired Arizona State's OC Mike Norvell.

I think it is entirely fair to note that African Americans continue to be underrepresented among college football head coaches. 45% of players in NCAA Div I are Black. Only about a dozen out of 128 FBS coaches (including our own) are.

Agreed. When Asians and Martians comprise half of the population playing a sport (and have for decades) I'll be equally interested in their representation.Â
Interestingly, Stanford's record is pretty good here. Not only Shaw, but we have connections to two other black coaches: Derek Mason and Willie Taggert at Univ. of Southern Florida.
