Kevin Hogan is tough as nails.  He has never missed a game due to injury, even though he's suffered a couple of injuries that probably would have kept most others out.  He did not even miss a game due to the death of his father.

After fighting through all that adversity, he's going to end up as the Stanford quarterback with the most career wins as a starter.  The wins include a Rose Bowl, 3 road games against top 10 teams.  When he finishes, he'll be second in Stanford history for completion percentage and passing efficiency, next to Andrew Luck.  He's also likely to end up 3rd or 4th in Stanford history in attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns.

For all the criticism he gets here, I think it's about time he gets a thread that is just devoted to the fact that he's made a tremendous contribution to Stanford Football.  Hopefully, this thread can stay positive from start to finish and we can save our criticism for another thread.

I agree, although Dallas Lloyd would be going for his second Voldemort this year if he had gotten a fair shake.

I like the concept of this thread a lot.  Too often we (and I will include myself here, as well as the Big We of media, fan chat sites, etc) end up focusing on the shortcomings of athletes, rather than their strengths.

Added to Trumpcard's list, I would add Hogan's leadership as a definite plus for Hogan, particularly this year.  His willingness to play through obvious pain, his understanding of the offense, and his experience, have all helped him emerge as a true leader, and you increasingly hear other players say so.  Whichever QB takes over when Hogan's Stanford career is over and he moves on will have a tough act to follow.

Hogan's really impressed in 6 out of the last seven games.  Except for the NW game, which was a bad game all around, he has been great.

I want to just add an observation that I have not seen previously about Kevin Hogan.  His ball handling is generally very good.  When necessary he is as deft and deceptive as any QB I have seen.  Given that many of the plays that Stanford runs do not rely on sleight of hand, this skill is not flashed all that frequently.  Power and counter are, after all, pretty straight forward.  And maybe that fact enhances the efficacy of his ball-handling.

I would also comment that he reminds me of a fictional childhood hero of mine, Chip Hilton.  Clean-cut, humble, soft spoken but tough as nails.  He is also clutch, as demonstrated by his many performances in brobdingnagian games.

Finally, something tells me that he has a significant untapped burst that we will see before the end of the year.  It is probably the confluence I create between Hogan and my fictional hero, Hilton.  But I sense there is a truly brobdingnagian moment waiting for Kevin.  If so, we will be the beneficiaries.

Does Hogan happen to work night shifts in a factory, too? And do we have a Speedy Morris on the team?

oldalum - you dog you.  I did not recall the factory job.  Speedy Morris will be a pale shadow of Christian McCaffery.

When Luck left we got exactly what I expected in Nunes.  Bless his heart and his performance against USC, but we weren't going to be world beaters.  And then along came Hogan.  After learning about his personal trials last year my respect for him soared.  He may never be an NFL star, or maybe he will be, but frankly who cares.  I am proud to have him as our quarterback.  Hogan is a warrior in the best sense of the word.  Go Hoagie!

That's how he caught the guy who was ruining the batches of ceramics (or whatever they were making) by throwing some adulterant into the vats at night when no one was around. You're right, I am an old dog. Remember him running the flea flicker play? And do I remember them taking down the feared Maroon Monsters from Minnesota once?

In addition to all the nice things people have said about Keven, let me add my appreciation of something that has been left out--his humility.  Kevin always goes out of his way in interviews to credit his teammates.  Teammates also report that he seeks out freshman to encourage and mentor.  Kevin seems, from all reports, to be a really, really good human being.

First ever start - at home against then #11 Oregon State (7-1/5-1 at the time, including a Beavers victory over Wisconsin - a Badgers team we would later play in the Rose Bowl)...

And as an encore, second start - on the road at Autzen, against then #2 Oregon (10-0/7-0 at the time, riding a longest-in-the-nation 13-game winning streak, including victories in the Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl the previous season, and a Ducks team that would finish 12-1 with a victory over Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl)...

We've talked about his memorable first starts - looking back at those first couple starts for purposes of this thread, they are even more remarkable than I recently remembered...

I was at the Colorado game when Hogan effectively took over from Nunes.  After the Arizona game heroics by Nunes, the offense had sputtered and struggled against Notre Dame (loss), Cal (win) and WSU (barely a win).  In the first two offensive series vs. Colorado, Stanford got one 1st down and punted twice.  They were ahead 7-0 as a result of an Ed Reynolds INT return for a TD.  But the Cardinal was making one of the worst defenses in the conference look like one of the best.  Lots of fans on edge in the stands.  The criticism of Shaw sounded similar to what we have heard since then when the offense looks impotent.

Hogan took over for Nunes to start the 2nd quarter.  In three plays, Stanford had scored.  The next time they got the ball, Stanford scored again.  Then they did it again and again before the half.  Up 35-0.  The local utility might have been able to measure the electricity in the Stanford crowd.  After the half, Hogan kept it going with a FG and TD.  In his first 6 series, Stanford scored 5 TDs and a FG.  We had the QB we needed.

I am still in awe of what Hogan did the rest of the season - beat 4 ranked teams, then lead Stanford to a Rose Bowl win.  But that Colorado game was as important as any that season.  Hogan convinced Shaw to give him the reins.
