Looked like an ankle to me based on what the trainers were working on.

"Irwin Fletcher" is the full name of the mystery-solving reporter in the Fletch books, but his eligibility was used up decades ago. I regret the error, but am appalled that you didn't catch the allusion to classical literature. Didn't you have to take West Civ at Stanford?

Irwin Maurice Fletcher (I. M. Fletcher) went by Fletch.  First book, written by Gregory MacDonald in 1974, movie with Chevy Chase, 1985.  Very funny series of books, read like Hiaasen's books.  MacDonald was a Hahvahd grad, wrote 26 novels, the first in 1964, apparently the experience scarred him, because he waited 10 years to come out with the very funny Fletch.

Western Civ was not a requirement during my years ('79 - '83).  I could have Googled it, but I was lazy.
