Why not?  You only need a 2.0 to get a scholarship per NCAA rules.

Good idea.  Next thing is to stop early enrollment.

Or count the school year of early enrollment as one of the athletic eligibilty years. Say a 2016 recruit enrolls early in Jan. 2016: he would be eligible to compete for three years, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19. If a recruit figures on going pro in three years, good for him. But he cannot enroll early and compete for four years.

That might be harsh given that even regular recruits have 5 years to compete in 4 (i.e., a redshirt year).  I think it is reasonable to a) make an early enrollee a "counter" for the previous academic year (currently, I think an early starter can "count" for whatever scholarship year the institution wants, so if they are under 25 for the year before, the institution counts them for the earlier year).  b) Make the early enrollee use up their redshirt year, leaving them with four years to compete in four.

Re: Academic redshirts - ca245 - 09-24-2015

Option a) is unlikely to have any bite in FB unless a scholarship cannot be re-awarded to a different student during the same school year. After the fall, many programs have players declaring early for the draft and dropping out of school, creating openings.

I don't think that would quite help teams under the current rules, and may be more difficult under the new permutations.

Scholarship counting is done at the start of football season. So, the total number of scholarships active during spring semester is not an issue. Thus, there is no particular incentive to cut seniors off of scholarship after their last football season.

In addition, the new move is to offer scholarships guaranteed for four years. That's optional, but it sort of looks like most FBS teams are going that direction - though I haven't seen enough reporting to be sure. Then it starts depending upon the details of what "four years" means in the guarantee. Is it four football seasons? eight semesters? through spring semester senior year?

Our own players often enroll for the summer quarter prior to their freshman year.

Since Fall camp begins before classes, don't they have to enroll Summer quarter to be eligible to participate?

No. NCAA rules allow incoming freshmen to compete in the fall even if classes haven't started yet at their school.

Well, there are some schools where you have to be a sentient being to enroll, though obviously not in the SEC.

Still, you are correct. There is no will to pass rules restricting early enrollment, and even if there were, it is hard to see what procedure could pass that would do so.

Enrolling for summer quarter does allow them to work with the S&C coach all summer, which wouldn't be allowed otherwise.
