Stanford's Next President – Your Input Requested - Papa John - 09-22-2015

Just found the following email in my inbox (the email's subject is the same as the subject of this topic):
*******************
Dear Alum,

This past June, I wrote to you with news of John Hennessy’s decision to step down as president of Stanford. In August, the Board of Trustees announced a Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Isaac Stein. As the Search Committee begins its work, I write today to ask for your input on the search for President Hennessy's successor.

Below, I have shared a link to a short survey. We are very interested in learning what our alumni think are the most important qualities and skills to be found in our next president. Once collected, the Alumni Association will share this feedback with the Presidential Search Committee appointed just a few weeks ago. Rest assured that your thoughtful input, especially at this early stage of the process, will prove highly valuable to the search committee. I know that the Presidential Search Committee will provide further updates as the search continues to proceed.

Please follow this link to share your opinions:

Thank you, as always, for staying connected to Stanford.

Sincerely,

Howard E. Wolf, ‘80
Vice President for Alumni Affairs, Stanford University
President, Stanford Alumni Association

I haven't seen this posted elsewhere (which guarantees absolutely nothing) and am wondering if you're thinking of applying, Papa John?  8)

I would, but it's a long commute from Santa Barbara.

I hear housing is part of the deal. Maybe you'll be neighbors with some of the football coaches!

Sorry for my blasphemy, but I actually prefer the "American Riviera" to Palo Alto...

I took the survey and at the end they asked if I knew anyone particularly suited for the job.  I almost wrote Yvonne but didn't want to jinx the Google deal.

I've heard that John Bravman will be one to keep an eye on for the job.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Bravman

Left his post as Vice President of Undergrad Education at Stanford (37 years at the University) to become President at Bucknell since 2010.

Well, I used to play basketball with his son around escondido village (play basketball = make a hoop with my arms as the kid was only about four years old) - so he's got that going for him.
My understanding is that he is generally well liked at Stanford, but may not have the academic gravitas that they usually look for.

Steve Chu would seem a strong candidate whom I mentioned in my survey response (Nobel Laureate, recently Secretary of Energy) - but he might be a couple of years older than they would like.

Re: Stanford's Next President – Your Input Requested - needle - 09-23-2015

I missed this from August, but it looks like Etchemendy, the provost, does not want and/or is not getting the job.

Quote:  Etchemendy has previously indicated that he does not want to be considered as a candidate for the presidency.

Hennessy, of course, was an internal hire, so I would have assumed that an internal hire would again be most likely. But perhaps not.

EDIT: Feel free to ignore my likely unwarranted cynicism regarding the statement that Etchemendy doesn't want the prez job. I just think that candidates often pull themselves out of consideration only after they know they are not going to be the choice.

Most not-quite-elite universities make almost exclusively external hires for their top posts.

A couple of places are known for making mostly internal hires (MIT).

Stanford seems to have had a mix of internal/external hires for the presidency. Casper - external. Kennedy - internal. Lyman - internal. Pitzer - external. Sterling - external. Tressider - mostly internal. Wilbur - internal. Branner - internal. Jordan - external.

I agree with Garvin.  I think recent history favors an inside candidate and given Stanford's rise in prominence, I would rather promote from within.  I think it sends a strong positive message to those faculty interested in pursuing such a role.

Regarding Etch, he spoke at the Freshman parents welcome event last week.  Knowing that the search was underway, I was looking for him to really bring a strong speech regarding the future.  He was solid, but it wasn't masterful imho.  I think that the taint of the GSB debacle may be too much to overcome.

As for John H - he has been masterful and Stanford has benefited greatly from his leadership.  I'm thankful for his guidance and wit over the years.  He's a class act and he appreciates the student athlete, renaissance man/woman.

None of the Search Committee members appears to have an obvious tie to athletics.  But I hope that "positive attitude toward athletics" is a quality on their list.

Would Condoleeza Rice get consideration?  She has academic background plus management experience.

she probably would be considered if she was interested, but I think there are a lot of people inside the University who would not be thrilled if she got the job.

One place on the survey included interest in athletics as a choice.  I marked it.

I assume this survey was meant to be kept to alumni only...

Re: Stanford's Next President – Your Input Requested - jacketree - 09-23-2015

I shall not seek, and I will not accept....

(One of my first dinner time TV news memories)

I put that survey in the ash heap of spam/ham because as we all know "thank your for your point of view" means it is ignored.

If you click on the OP's survey link, it says it has already been completed (meaning it is a link unique to the OP), so I don't think there is going to be a massive hacker led survey revolt for say Donald Trump as the next President of Stanford University; a response so strong the BOT has no choice but to listen.

Oh, you're right jacketree. Well, in that case, ferrari, thank you for completing my survey! Since great minds think alike, I'm sure that you responded just as I would have.

I completed my own survey from the link in the email I received.

Oops, my apologies. And my fault for not extracting the survey link when I copied my email into my first post on this topic...

Re: Stanford's Next President – Your Input Requested - TreesAndBirds - 09-24-2015

I had a real dilemma when completing the survey. The obvious person to recommend to succeed President Hennessey is Coach Shaw. He's displayed the ability to raise funds, work well with  the university administration, understands and stays true to the ideals of our university despite the inherent difficulties, mentor a diverse group of students and mold them into loyal Stanford alums, turned down large amounts of money to leave Stanford,  etc. But I ultimately decided not to recommend him because I'm sure there are other good candidates for President, but I couldnt come up with any other candidates to be our head coach.
