Grading the Cardinal, Position by Position - Hank 91 - 12-20-2010

Over at GoMightyCard.com, I\'ve been doing a position by position review of the season, giving grades to each unit.  Just today I wrapped up the offense, with defense to come.  It\'s just one man\'s opinion, so I\'d love to hear what people here think about the accuracy of my grades:

I\'ve really been enjoying the write-ups.

I think that the coaching staff has demonstrated over the past three years that it can replace talent on the offensive line without a hiccough.  We\'ve recruited some talented linemen, and I\'m optimistic that they can step in (ala DeCastro and Martin) and contribute.

Even more amazing was our ability to replace Chris Dalman.  That\'s what I was really scared about.

Nice job!

Really enjoyed reading, Hank. Great job. I think your assessments of this year were quite accurate, with one minor quarrel. With one game to go, team rushing yardage is about 90% of last year\'s (TDs similar). Assuming last year was an A, the lowest grade I would assign for this year would be an A-. Because we were so far ahead in many games this year, we basically ran out the clock in a number of games, not amassing as much yardage as we could have. Plus there were the oddities like Wilkerson\'s "sit down" at the three against Arizona. After losing the incomparable Toby, I thought his replacements were just short of sensational. Thanks to the O-line, too.

but if the concern is total yardage,  how much actual additional yards did Wilkerson\'s sit down actually cost us?   Ten?  Thirteen?

I cited the sit-down as an example of an "oddity" that contrained the touchdown total--not the yardage total.

Yards per rush - Mick - 12-21-2010

5.3 last year, 5.0 this year.  Take out the QB rushing, it\'s 5.1 to 4.5.  I\'m not unhappy about it.

Unless you\'re a high school student trying to get in to Stanford, a B+ isn\'t a bad grade.  I figured the running game would be almost as good as last year based on the depth of talent and the return of most of the offensive linemen, but things weren\'t as automatic this year in short yardage situations, especially at the goal line.  The bottom line, though, is that we\'re miles above where we were three or four years ago.

Hank, I really enjoyed your write-ups.  Very good stuff for those of us who don\'t see all the games.  Merry Christmas!

Your long exile is over.   You can follow Pac-12 football and watch all the Colorado Buffaloes you want...or, can stomach.

And finally, the defensive backs.
