Adjusted OL starts? - OutsiderFan - 08-21-2015

History tells us returning OL starts is a great predictor of a college football team's success.  Just looking at this year, UCLA returns 131 starts to lead the country.  Stanford is down at #63 with "just 65" returning starts.

But I'm thinking this stat is a bit misleading for Stanford, considering both Murphy and Garnett received a lot more playing time as underclassmen than the typical college OL that really never plays much until he is actually starting.  In other words, other programs don't play as many OL as Stanford does, so Stanford's OL experience is probably more valuable than #63 in the land, just not sure how much.

So I'm wondering if the brainiacs here can identify some sort of "OK, they weren't a starter, but played so many snaps that they should be considered as good as many starters," type of modifier to pure OL starts?

Number of meaningful snaps seen while the scoring difference was less than 21 pts or during the first two or three quarters?  (Arbitrary scoring threshold.)

Is there any stat kept for snaps played per player?

Only by coaches and dedicated fans, I think.

Returning starts, of course, means a little more at some positions than others: quarterback, offensive line, linebackers, and free safety.

We're in good shape there: Hogan, five OLs counting Hooper, and Martinez and Anderson, and Kalambayi got a lot of snaps. Much better than last season.
