Somebody made a REALLY bad marketing decision

Clearly below Mason's pay grade, but no coach wants that headache.

I'm not sure it's a terribly powerful slogan, regardless of the unfortunate implications not related to football.

Is Vandy currently involved in a rape investigation involving football players (I typically try to avoid that kind of news)? That's really the only reason I would see people being upset about this.

not currently (at least that I am aware of) but in January 2015
Tuesday, former Vanderbilt University football players Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were found guilty in the rape of an unconscious woman in a dorm on June 23, 2013.

That's unfortunate, but makes a bit more sense. Thank you.

If an agency creative team ever brought that slogan to him, a good creative director would roll his eyes.  The rape connotation isn't the only issue with it. What the hell does it even mean?

It's a stupid slogan, outside of any connotation.Â

Not sure I trust any analyst's take on the propriety of football team slogans before I hear Wilner's.

Anyone remember "We Work"?

The "slogan" was out of context from an earlier tweet from Mason and the athletics department is really sorry and did you know that the tweet, in fact, had nothing to do with sexual assault? Anyway, rape is wrong and definitely not acceptable at Vanderbilt.

And I thought "We Work" was the dumbest college football marketing campaign ever...silly me.

The Big 12 slogan: "Every game matters."
Stupid or clever... - Redrum - 08-06-2015
Why would they choose a shot of a crowd-deficient stadium pic as their icon for football madness and bad-assness? Poor Vandy. If " We Don't Need Your Permission" is dead, my suggested replacement: "Fans? We Don't Need No Stinking Fans!"

Thanks for the context. I feel a little bit better about Mason as a result.

"We work" was bad, but made sense. I wish our department would consult with some pros.

I never understood the complaints over "We Work". It's lame, but so is every other sports slogan. And it worked for the team. That was Harbuagh's "we're blue collar" mentality that drove the team to success. It fit the team, it reinforced their personality, and it probably didn't impact ticket sales one way or another.

Wliner's explanation for the complaints was that Stanford, an elitist institution, was thumbing its nose at those poor slobs who were out of work in the valley. it was really a stretch, at least IMO.
